In Loving Memory of

Blake Jose Avelino

On February 13, 2021, my nephew, Blake Avelino, passed away. Blake was 34 and was like a second son to me.

We now seek to heal our broken hearts by remembering the Blake we knew and loved, before we lost him to his battle with schizophrenia and the world of drugs that he was driven to.

We remember instead the smile that lit up a room… his infectious energy and laughter… his excellence in basketball, taekwondo and mixed martial arts.

We remember all the fun times at family gatherings, his thoughtfulness and caring… how gentle he was and how he could say “love you” and you felt how much he meant it.

There are many others like Blake in our society. Although well understood by the medical profession, society still misunderstands their illness, and they are neglected or shunned because we still know so little of their trauma. The resources they need are severely limited by bureaucratic procedures and red tape. The rabbit hole that Blake spiraled down into continues to trap our youth and end so many young lives.

Blake was loved by family and friends and will be greatly missed. Our tribute to Blake strives to keep his memory alive. We will continue to support the charities that tried to help him and many others like him in need of help.

In this initial segment of our tribute to Blake, we have chosen The Door is Open as one of the charities that provided food and shelter to those in need, and was there for Blake in his struggle for peace. We are hoping friends, family and colleagues will share our commitment to prevent the ruin of other young lives that struggle with addictions and mental battles as Blake did.

We love you Blake and we will never forget you.
